<image:title>News - Aleksandra wins poster prize at the Sussex Cancer Research Centre Annual Symposium!</image:title>
<image:caption>Congratulations to Aleksandra Kolosova, who was awarded the poster prize at this year's Sussex Cancer Research Centre Annual Symposium. Aleksandra, a PhD student in the lab, presented her work on “How AML Heterogeneity Shapes the Bone Marrow Niche to Drive Therapy Resistance and Response”. The prize recognises both the quality of her science and the clarity with which she communicated it. The symposium brings together cancer researchers from across Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the University of Sussex, the University of Brighton, and NHS Trusts to share new findings and build collaborations. It was a great opportunity for Aleksandra to discuss her project with the wider community and a well-deserved result so early in her PhD. Congratulations, Aleksandra — a fantastic achievement!</image:caption>

<image:title>News - New review: the bone marrow microenvironment as a barrier — and a target — in AML</image:title>
<image:caption>We're delighted to share a new review from the lab, published in Blood and Lymphatic Cancer: Targets and Therapy. Led by PhD students Aleksandra Kolosova and Imogen Mould, it explores how the bone marrow microenvironment shapes acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) — acting both as a barrier that shields leukaemia cells from treatment and as a source of crosstalk that could itself be targeted therapeutically. It maps the interactions between leukaemia cells and their surrounding niche, and asks how disrupting that relationship might make AML more vulnerable to therapy — a question at the heart of the lab's research. It's a particularly proud milestone to see the review first-authored by Aleksandra and Imogen so early in their PhDs. Read the review: Kolosova A, Mould I, Pepper C, Mitchell S, Pepper A, Ladikou E, Simoes F. <image:title>News - Aleksandra and Imogen win presentation prize at the Sussex Cancer Research Centre celebration - Congratulations!</image:title>
<image:caption>Aleksandra Kolosova (PhD student in the Simoes Lab) and Imogen Mould (a PhD student co-supervised by Dr Fabio Simoes and Dr Eleni Ladikou), were awarded the presentation prize at the PHARMAKON exhibition by artist Markus Taylor which was part of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre's (SCRC) annual celebration. The morning brought researchers, artists and the local community together for a programme of creative cancer-research engagement — alongside the exhibition there were presentations from the SCRC Community Engagement Project and a series of lightning lectures from SCRC scientists, in which Aleksandra and Imogen presented their research. Their prize recognised the pair for doing the best job of making their science clear, engaging and accessible to a general audience — a reminder that communicating research well is every bit as important as the research itself. Congratulations to both on a fantastic result, and a great showcase of the lab's commitment to public engagement!</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Welcome Aleksandra!</image:title>
<image:caption>Thrilled to welcome Aleksandra Kolosova to the Simoes Lab as a new PhD student. Her research will aim to uncover whether AML-driven changes in the BMME vary across different subtypes or follow common patterns that could be targeted for treatment. Aleksandra will employ a variety of techniques to study the interactions between AML cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), with the goal of identifying pathways that can be therapeutically disrupted to enhance chemotherapy outcomes. Aleksandra recently completed her MSci in Genetics at the University of Swansea, and we are excited to support her as she takes on this important work. She is co-supervised by Prof. Andrea Peper and Dr Simon Mitchell.</image:caption>
